Herefordshire Cricket Awards

24 Apr 2024   |   By Richard Prime

IT was a night to remember for the Herbert family when Herefordshire Cricket Ltd held their annual awards evening at Hereford FC’s Hereford Suite.

After 30 years as scorer at Wormelow and many years scoring for the county’s age group sides and organising scorer appointments for cricket in the county, Jan Herbert was named Official of the Year.

Jan’ husband Graham and his club colleague Derek Porter were awarded the Grounds Team of the year for their work over a period of more than 30 years to make Wormelow’s playing surface one of the best in the county.

And, to round off a memorable evening for the family, the couple’s grandson Noah also picked up an award as the under-11 boys bowler of the year.

On an evening compered by Herefordshire Cricket’s general manager Richard Cox, more than 100 members of the Herefordshire cricket community had a chance to celebrate the awards presentations introduced by staff members Kirsty Sockett and Pete Gale.

A number of Services to Cricket awards were presented to mark decades-long service by several individuals.

Those recognised for their contributions to their clubs and the wider game in the county were cricket board directors Jim Sandford (Eastnor) and Roy Wargen (Brockhampton), as well as umpire and fundraiser John Beaman, Ian Jones (Dales), Ian ‘Knocker’ Lawrence (Luctonians), Terry ‘FT’ Mason (Herefordians), Derrick Jones (Bartestree & Lugwardine) and Steve de Souza (Burghill, Tillington & Weobley).

Krissie Stevenson of Burghill, Tillington & Weobley won the Rob Staite Award as Volunteer of the Year.

As well as the award presentations, the evening featured a question-and-answer session featuring Herefordshire National Counties skipper Matt Pardoe, who also presented the awards, and all-rounder Roshan Venkataraman.
