T20 double-header against Wales at Llandysul on Sunday
26 Apr 2024 | By Richard Prime
HEREFORDSHIRE will be hoping for greater support from the weather this year when their National Counties programme gets underway with a T20 double-header against Wales at Llandysul on Sunday.
Last year, half of the county side’s games in the T20 competition fell victim either to rain or wet pitches, a foretaste of the remainder of the season which featured regular bad weather interruptions.
Herefordshire give a debut to the Halesowen and former Brockhampton all-rounder Luke Tulacz while there is also a first competitive county appearance for teenage all-rounder Daniyal Khan, who has featured for Warwickshire 2nd.
Eighteen-year-old Khan made a promising impression in a warm-up game against Buckinghamshire at Tring last weekend, providing a rare bright spot when he lashed three sixes in an innings of 45 as Herefordshire slipped to a nine-wicket defeat.
The county side showed a substantial improvement in the second of the day’s two games, going down by just 10 runs as Ollie Walker (58), Nick Hammond (29) and Matt Pardoe (27) all showed good early-season form in the pursuit of a victory target of 169.
Pardoe will again be skippering the side this summer while Roshan Venkataraman, fresh from being named Herefordshire Cricket’s first-team player of the year for 2023, will be hoping to show the bowling form which saw him concede only 16 runs, while taking five wickets, in eight overs in Herefordshire’s last competitive T20 double clash against Cornwall last season.
Play is due to get under way in the first of the day’s two matches at Llandysul at 11am. After this weekend, Herefordshire will be twice inT20 action over the Bank Holiday weekend, visiting Shropshire at Oswestry on the Sunday before entertaining Oxfordshire at Brockhampton on Bank Holiday Monday.
