Herefordshire 1st X1 V WCCC Tuesday 21st July

LUKE Powell will captain Herefordshire for the first time when the county side takes on first-class neighbours Worcestershire in the annual ECB Showcase match at Eastnor tomorrow XX Tuesday 21 July XX.

The wicketkeeper-batsman will deputise for regular skipper Luke Tulacz who is one of a number of players absent due to work commitments.

Those unavailable include a trio of pacemen – James Rudge, Roshan Venkataraman and Theo Barker – but this gives an opportunity for two young seamers, Burghill, Tillington & Weobley opening bowler Archie Stevenson and Worcestershire Academy’s James Cooley to be included in the Herefordshire squad for the first time.

There’s also an opportunity for Herefordshire cricket followers to get a first look at young batsman Freddie Ammonds in county colours.

And there’s a return to the side for Indiana Jerram who has been in good form with the bat for Brockhampton as the villagers have made their way to the top of the Worcestershire County League Premier Division.

Also back in the Herefordshire team is top-order batsman Ollie Rogoff who missed the recent trip to Devon because he was playing for the UK Armed Forces team.

In the past two years, the Showcase game has brought subsequent success for Herefordshire’s opponents.  Two years ago, Herefordshire played Gloucestershire in two T20 matches with the visitors going on to win the Vitality Blast Competition.

Then, last year, Herefordshire played Worcestershire in a 50-over match before the first-class county went on to win the Metro Bank One-Day cup.

Play in this year’s 50-over match gets under way at 11am.
