Worcestershire triumph over Herefordshire in the Annual ECB Showcase Game at Eastnor CC

A SUPERB innings of 148 from opener Daniel Lategan ultimately proved the difference between the two sides as Worcestershire triumphed over Herefordshire in the annual ECB showcase game at Eastnor.

Lategan pounded 15 fours and four sixes on his way to a score which almost exactly matched the 146-run margin of victory.

After being invited to bat first, Worcestershire quickly lost Isaac Mohaamed to Archie Stevenson (1-39).

But after that, runs flowed freely on a true pitch and a fast outfield with Kashif Ali (37), skipper Jake Libby (81) and Henry Cullen (52) assisting Lategan in keeping the runs coming at a good pace.

The Herefordshire attack, however, stuck manfully to their task in the hot conditions with Ali Latif (2-54), Ben Chapman-Lilley (1-46), James Cooley (1-54), Joel Cox (1-65) and Indiana Jerram (1-71) all gaining some reward for their efforts.

Hasan Mahmood (29) and Ollie Cox (13) got the Herefordshire innings away to a promising start but four wickets fell quickly as the home side slipped to 46-4.

Acting skipper Luke Powell (72), however, steadied matters in partnership first with Ollie Rogoff (22) and subsequently with George Hallam (12), whose second-ball six to get off the mark was one of the biggest hits of the day, and then Jerram (27).

When Powell was dismissed after hitting seven fours and a six in his 92-ball innings, there was still some fun to come as Latif (29 not out) and Cooley (20) took the final score to 244 with a half-century last-wicket stand which included a flurry of boundaries from both players.

Herefordshire are back in action this weekend when Wiltshire are the visitors to Eastnor for a three-day NCCA Western Division One match which starts at 11am on Sunday.
